Why we recommend it

Knight Set is the default answer when someone asks for the best armor in Elden Ring without a custom weight budget. At 25.3 weight it reaches the 51 poise breakpoint most PvE players want, keeps solid physical negation for the cost, and is easy to buy once Twin Maiden Husks are stocked. Heavier tanks out-negate it, but almost nothing matches this balance of poise, defense, and medium roll comfort for general play.

Best use

Default full set for open-world PvE, boss attempts, and any build that still medium-rolls at ~25 armor weight. Pair with a poise talisman only if you need the next breakpoint. Skip it when your remaining budget is under ~20, you are committed to an effect set (White Mask, Death Knight, Rakshasa), or Endurance already funds Veteran's / Bull-Goat without losing the roll you want.

Why we recommend it

Veteran's Set is the heavy armor most players can actually wear: 79 poise, excellent physical negation, and 45 weight instead of Bull-Goat's 63. Sold by Enia after the right remembrance, it is the best default tank set when you want real defense without committing to ultra-heavy load every run.

Best use

Main heavy set for strength and quality kits once Endurance supports ~45 armor weight at medium or heavy roll. Excellent daily driver before Bull-Goat. Skip it if you refuse to leave medium roll and Knight already covers poise 51, or if Lionel/s slash-pierce profile fits a specific boss better.

Why we recommend it

Bull-Goat Set is the pure poise ceiling of the base game: 100 poise and top-tier physical negation if you can afford the 63 weight. It is not a fashion or efficiency pick — it exists for fat-roll tanks, poise trades, and builds that stack Great-Jar arsenal or Bull-Goat's Talisman on purpose. When the question is literally highest poise, this is still the base-game answer.

Best use

Wear it for deliberate heavy or fat-roll tanking, colossal weapon hyper-armor windows, and challenge setups that stack Great-Jar / Bull-Goat's Talisman. Leave it off normal medium-roll playthroughs, tight Endurance budgets, and any route where rolling out of AOEs matters more than trading hits. Compare Verdigris in the DLC before locking the base-game goat forever.

Why we recommend it

Divine Bird Warrior Set is the Shadow of the Erdtree medium set that behaves like an upgraded Knight package: 53 poise at 27 weight with strong physical negation. If you want DLC armor that still medium-rolls on normal Endurance, start here before heavier remembrance sets.

Best use

Best default DLC medium once you reach Ancient Ruins of Rauh. Replace Knight for Shadow bosses if you still medium-roll. Skip it only when an effect set is mandatory (Death Knight lightning, Rakshasa glass, Fire Knight load passive) or you are already committed to Gaius/Verdigris heavy.

Why we recommend it

Lionel's Set sits next to Veteran's on poise while reading as the classic oversized knight look. Physical and pierce negation are excellent, the full set is free in Leyndell, and it remains one of the best base-game heavy options if you prefer its slash/pierce profile over Veteran's even spread.

Best use

Pick it up free in Leyndell and keep it as a heavy alternative to Veteran's when pierce or fashion matters. Strong for capital and late-base-game bosses. Avoid forcing it before you can carry ~50 weight, and do not treat it as a medium-roll set — mix pieces or stay on Knight until Endurance catches up.

Why we recommend it

Verdigris Set matches Bull-Goat's 100 poise fantasy in Shadow of the Erdtree with slightly different negation and a lower total weight. If your endgame tank lives in the DLC and you already run heavy load, Verdigris is the set to compare first against Bull-Goat rather than another midweight fashion set.

Best use

Best late DLC tank shell when you already accept heavy load and want Bull-Goat-class poise inside the Realm of Shadow. Use it for remembrance bosses and long Scadu routes. Skip it on a first DLC pass still stuck in medium armor, or if Bull-Goat plus your base-game talismans already hits the poise plan with better fashion.

Why we recommend it

Rellana's Set keeps the 51 poise medium breakpoint at 28.1 weight with balanced elemental coverage and a clean dual-knight silhouette. It is one of the best looking DLC medium options that still plays like a serious defensive set, not a pure fashion piece.

Best use

Wear after the Rellana fight when you want 51 poise medium with better fashion and elemental spread than base Knight. Great for INT/quality hybrids that like the twin-moon look. Skip if Divine Bird is already equipped and heavier, or if you need a passive more than the silhouette.

Why we recommend it

Scaled Set from Old Knight Istvan lands 58 poise at 38 weight with even elemental coverage across the board. It is a favorite when you want more protection than Knight without jumping straight to Lionel or Veteran bulk, and the invasion clear is a cleaner acquisition path than multi-enemy farms. Keep it as your mid-heavy default until a remembrance tank clearly fits the load.

Best use

Clear Istvan, equip the set, and use it as the step between Knight and true heavies. Ideal while Endurance is climbing. Replace with Veteran's or Lionel when you can carry them at your preferred roll; skip farming Istvan if you already own those heavies.

Why we recommend it

Banished Knight Set is the farmable heavy knight look with 60 poise and excellent slash/physical numbers. It is heavier than Knight but lighter than Veteran's, so it fills the gap for players who want real tank stats without remembrance shopping.

Best use

Farm it in Castle Sol, Stormveil, or other Banished Knight dens when you want 60 poise before remembrance shopping. Solid mid-to-late base-game heavy. Skip the long farm if Scaled, Crucible Axe, or Enia heavies are closer on your route.

Why we recommend it

Crucible Axe Set rewards the Ordovis fight with strong physical negation and 58 poise at a manageable heavy weight. It is one of the best looking mid-heavy sets that still competes on raw defense, not only fashion, and the axe variant reads cleaner than most altered knight kits. Use it when you want Crucible presence without Bull-Goat weight.

Best use

Claim it after Ordovis and keep it for mid-heavy PvE when you like the Crucible look. Competes with Scaled and Cleanrot in the same band. Skip if you already finished Scaled at lower quest friction, or if you are saving the slot for a remembrance heavy next.

Special effect

Boosts ancient dragon cult skills and incantations

Why we recommend it

Death Knight Set is the DLC medium set with a real build hook: it strengthens Ancient Dragon Cult skills and Incantations while staying near Knight weight. Lightning Faith kits and gravel-stone playstyles get defense and a passive in one package.

Best use

Equip the full set on Ancient Dragon Cult and lightning Incantation kits so the passive and medium defense land together. Keep Knight or Divine Bird for non-lightning routes. Skip when the seal kit is fire, holy, or pure melee with no cult skills — the effect is wasted.

Why we recommend it

Gaius's Set brings 75 poise and strong slash and pierce negation in a DLC heavy package lighter than Solitude or Verdigris. It is the practical DLC heavy for players who want tank stats without the absolute heaviest loadouts, and it pairs cleanly with strength or quality kits that already live near heavy roll. Skip it only if you are forcing medium roll or already locked on Verdigris.

Best use

Best practical DLC heavy after Gaius when you want ~75 poise without Verdigris weight. Use on strength and quality DLC bosses. Skip while still medium-rolling Divine Bird, or if Solitude/Verdigris is already farmed and paid for in Endurance.

Special effect

Slightly raises max HP, stamina and equip load

Why we recommend it

Fire Knight Set is lighter than Knight, still holds 40 poise, and slightly raises max HP, stamina, and equip load. That passive makes it a strong hybrid pick for DLC routes where every point of load and stamina matters, even when the raw negation sits below Divine Bird Warrior. Wear the full set when the passive is the point; mix pieces when you only need the chest or helm bonus.

Best use

Run the full set when the HP/stamina/load passive is worth more than max negation — hybrid casters and tight load builds love it. Mix a single piece into heavier shells if you only need part of the bonus. Skip as a pure defense choice once Divine Bird or Rellana is available and load is already solved.

Why we recommend it

Radahn's Set is the remembrance heavy everyone recognizes: 60 poise, strong physical negation, and full Enia availability after the festival. It remains a top base-game heavy pick for players who want the general's silhouette with real stats, not only a boss trophy look. Compare it with Beast Champion and Banished Knight before spending the load on Bull-Goat.

Best use

Buy from Enia after Starscourge Radahn and wear it as the default late-base-game heavy fashion tank. Great when you want the general look with real poise. Skip if Veteran's or Lionel already covers your heavy slot at similar weight, or if you still cannot medium/heavy-roll 41+ armor weight.

Why we recommend it

Beast Champion Set is Bernahl's late heavy kit: 60 poise, high physical averages, and a complete four-piece package once his quest pays out. It sits with Banished Knight and Radahn as a top base-game heavy fashion and defense hybrid, so grab it when you want a finished silhouette that still trades like real armor instead of pure cosplay.

Best use

Finish Bernahl's line and wear it as a late base-game heavy fashion tank. Strong alternative to Radahn if you prefer the champion look. Do not wait on this set in early-mid game — use Knight, Scaled, or Exile until the quest actually drops the pieces.

Best Early Game Armor in Elden Ring

Early armor is about getting a full matching set with real physical numbers before Altus. Buy Iron when you reach the Weeping Peninsula merchant, farm Kaiden in Limgrave, and pick up Exile while clearing Stormveil. Build-specific

Best Armor for Different Builds

Short picks for common kits. Strength wants poise, dex wants roll speed and fashion, bleed wants White Mask energy, casters want effect cloth or Carian Knight, and Samurai stays in the reed/ronin lane until a real medium set fits.

Best Armor for Strength Builds

Strength kits live on poise windows and physical negation. Open on Knight or Fingerprint so charged heavies and colossal trades feel fair, then spend Endurance on Veteran's or Lionel before you ever touch Bull-Goat. Bull-Goat is the ceiling for pure tank setups and Great-Jar stacks — not the default for every strength run. If fire bosses dominate the route, Fingerprint's medium fire resist is the cheap mid-game detour.

Best Armor for Dexterity Builds

Dex wants roll speed and a finished silhouette more than raw bulk. Stay light or medium: Raging Wolf at Knight weight for quality-dex fashion, White Reed for katana fantasy, Ronin when elemental coverage matters more than poise. Once Endurance is comfortable, Divine Bird or plain Knight still out-defends pure cloth without killing the move set.

Best Armor for Bleed Builds

Bleed armor is effect-first. The War Surgeon / White Mask package is the identity piece once Mohgwyn is reachable; everything else is filler around that passive. Black Knife supports stealth openers, Rakshasa is the DLC glass-cannon amp, and light weight keeps dual-wield katanas or hooks rolling. Do not rank bleed sets by physical negation alone — the proc passive is the point.

Best Armor for Intelligence Builds

Split INT armor by job. Spellblades should wear Carian Knight (or another medium) so melee range trades do not delete you. Pure staff casters can sit in Azur, Lusat, Snow Witch or Preceptor cloth when the passive matches the school. Primeval sets are payoff items after the academy route — they are not general best-armor answers for a first playthrough.

Best Armor for Faith Builds

Faith still needs a real medium shell — Knight remains the default while seals do the damage. Layer Death Knight when Ancient Dragon Cult lightning is the kit, and Fire Knight in the DLC when the load/HP/stamina passive helps hybrid casters more than raw negation. Holy fashion pieces are optional; survival weight efficiency is not.

Best Armor for Samurai

Samurai has a clean upgrade path without leaving the reed look. Land of Reeds covers the opening hours; White Reed is the base-game finish in Spiritcaller Cave; Ronin is the alternate light end point with better elemental defense. When you want real poise, move up to Knight or a DLC medium set.

How We Rank Armor

Overall scores weight the factors below, then add a small medium-weight sweet-spot bonus when a set sits near common poise breakpoints like 51 — so practical all-rounders can outrank pure bulk that only works on specialized loadouts. The featured top list also favors sets that are actually worth wearing day to day. For a combination tailored to your remaining equip load, use the Armor Optimizer.

Best Armor FAQ

What is the best armor in Elden Ring?

For most players the best overall armor set is the Knight Set: 51 poise, medium weight, and strong defense without a special Endurance project. If you only care about maximum poise, use Bull-Goat (or Verdigris in the DLC). If you need a custom answer for your exact weight budget, use the Armor Optimizer.

What are the best armor sets in Elden Ring?

The top general sets are Knight, Veteran's, Bull-Goat, Divine Bird Warrior, Lionel, Verdigris, Rellana, Scaled, Banished Knight, and Crucible Axe. Quick Picks and the ranked list above separate overall, defense, poise, early game, DLC and effect answers so one list does not pretend every build wants the same set.

Is this an Elden Ring armor tier list?

Yes. This page includes a full S through D armor set tier list. You can rank by overall, defense, poise or weight efficiency, and filter by base game, DLC, light/medium/heavy, or special effects — so best picks, rankings and the tier list stay in one place.

What is the best early game armor?

Buy the Iron Set from the Castle Morne Rampart merchant, farm Kaiden in Limgrave, and pick up Exile pieces in Stormveil. Vagabond Knight and Land of Reeds are the best starting kits until those upgrades are ready.

What is the best DLC armor in Shadow of the Erdtree?

Divine Bird Warrior is the best DLC medium all-rounder. Verdigris is the best ultra heavy. Rellana is the best stylish 51-poise medium. Gaius is the best practical heavy under the absolute heaviest sets. Death Knight is the best effect medium for lightning cult kits.

What is the best medium armor set?

Knight Set is the best base-game medium. Divine Bird Warrior and Rellana are the best DLC mediums. Medium is also where weight efficiency and the 51 poise breakpoint matter most — which is why medium sets dominate the overall ranking.

Does heavier armor always mean better armor?

No. Heavier sets usually win raw negation and poise, but they cost equip load and can force fat rolls. A medium set with 51 poise often plays better than a heavier shell you cannot roll in. Rank by weight efficiency or open the Armor Optimizer when load is tight.

Where can I browse every armor set?

Every armor set and piece with stats, effects and locations is on the Elden Ring Armor page. Come here for ranked picks and the tier list; open All Armor when you need the complete list or effect filters.
