What Is Rennala Weak To?

Physical is the clean answer in both phases. Slash and pierce hit hardest; strike is average. Jump attacks and upgraded physical weapons beat glintstone trades here.

Magic is heavily resisted. Pure sorcery still works with enough upgrade and charged casts, but it is slower than a physical weapon with the same investment — especially in phase 2.

Fire, lightning and holy only lose a little in phase 1 and a bit more in phase 2. Fine as secondary damage; not a reason to rebuild the kit.

Bleed, frost, poison and scarlet rot all build. Sleep and madness do nothing. Bleed stays useful into phase 2; the other statuses take longer to proc once she shifts arenas.

Rennala Location

The Grand Library at the top of the Academy of Raya Lucaria in Liurnia of the Lakes.

Quick Answer

Location: Grand Library, Academy of Raya Lucaria, Liurnia of the Lakes

Nearest grace: Debate Parlor. After the kill, Raya Lucaria Grand Library appears in the same room.

Rennala waits in the Grand Library at the top of the Academy of Raya Lucaria in Liurnia of the Lakes. After Godrick (or the Liurnia cliff skip), grab a Glintstone Key, clear the academy through Church of the Cuckoo and Schoolhouse Classroom to the Red Wolf in Debate Parlor, then take the courtyard rooftops past Moongrum’s elevator into her fog.

Debate Parlor is the last rest before the library approach. Exit into the water courtyard, climb the broken masonry onto the academy rooftops, cross toward the northwest elevator landing, deal with Moongrum, Carian Knight, and ride the lift into the Grand Library. After the kill, Raya Lucaria Grand Library becomes the grace in the same room.

How to Get to Rennala

  1. Liurnia · Glintstone Key
  2. Academy gates
  3. Church of the Cuckoo
  4. Schoolhouse Classroom
  5. Red Wolf · Debate Parlor
  6. Rooftops · Moongrum elevator
  7. Grand Library · Rennala
  1. Step 1

From Limgrave / Godrick, reach Liurnia of the Lakes. The usual first Glintstone Key is on the broken bridge north of the academy (Glintstone Dragon route). A second key exists later inside the academy if you need another.

  2. Step 2

Use the key at the South or East Raya Lucaria Gate. Inside, progress Church of the Cuckoo → graveyard lift / wolf courtyard → Schoolhouse Classroom, then into the Debate Parlor for Red Wolf of Radagon.

  3. Step 3

Rest at Debate Parlor after the wolf. Leave into the outer courtyard, climb onto the rooftops (broken walls and buttresses), and work northwest toward the isolated elevator tower.

  4. Step 4

At the elevator landing, fight or run past Moongrum, Carian Knight. Take the lift up, step off into the Grand Library, and enter Rennala’s fog.

Nearest Site of Grace

Debate Parlor is the nearest Site of Grace before the fog — rest here, tidy flasks, and summon a spirit ash plan before the rooftop run.

Raya Lucaria Grand Library only appears after Rennala is defeated. That grace is also where you return for rebirth and cosmetics.

Rennala Recommended Level

A fair first-play window after Godrick and early Liurnia. Come hotter if academy enemies still delete you.

RecommendationValue
Character Level40–50
Vigor25+
Standard Weapon+8 to +12
Somber Weapon+4 to +5

Treat 40–45 as a comfortable first clear if you finished Godrick, cleared a chunk of Liurnia, and upgraded a physical weapon. Push toward 50 if academy scholars and Moongrum are still draining flasks.

Vigor in the mid-20s is enough for phase 2 comet trades if you dodge the big beams. Mages can sit a little lower on Vigor if they keep range and a spirit ash, but magic-primary kits hit Rennala softer than physical.

A spirit ash that draws Juvenile Scholars in phase 1, or holds Rennala in phase 2, is the simplest safety net. Summons are optional; they mainly buy free damage windows on the bubble breaks and spell recoveries.

Recommended Weapon Level for Rennala

Plan on a +8 to +12 standard weapon or +4 to +5 somber before the Grand Library. Upgrade level matters more here than five unspent attribute points, especially once phase 2 resets her health bar.

How to Beat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon

Break the phase 1 bubble, win the phase 2 mage duel, then clear with melee, mage, or an easy summon plan.

Quick Strategy

  • Bring a +8/+12 standard physical weapon (or +4/+5 somber), full flasks, and magic resist if you have it. Do not open with a pure magic plan unless that is your only upgraded path.
  • Phase 1: ignore Rennala’s golden bubble. Find the singing Juvenile Scholar (golden aura, louder song, purple books), hit them, then the next singer, then the third — bubble breaks, free damage on Rennala, leave before the golden explosion.
  • Phase 2: she resets to a full health bar on the moonlit water. Stay mobile, punish spell recoveries, and stop greed the moment a summon circle starts under 60% HP.
  • Spirit ashes help both phases — they peel scholars in the library and buy cast or charged-heavy windows in phase 2.
  • After the kill she stays in the library. Come back any time to rebirth your stats or change appearance.

Before the Fight

Aim for level 40–50 with a finished early-to-mid weapon upgrade path. Get Vigor into the mid-20s before you treat phase 2 comets as optional.

Default to physical slash or pierce. Leave holy- or magic-first kits behind unless you have no better upgrade.

Fill HP flasks first. Keep an FP flask if you will cast weapon skills, pots, or a few sorceries on bubble-break windows.

Magic resist from armor, a boiled crab, or Magic Fortification softens phase 2 beams. Not required, but it saves flasks while you learn the patterns.

Rest at Debate Parlor, clear Moongrum or decide to run past him, and pick a spirit ash before the elevator.

Rennala Phase 1 Strategy

Rennala floats in a golden sphere and takes no damage until the bubble breaks. The real targets are Juvenile Scholars — especially the one currently singing.

The singing scholar shows a golden aura, throws purple books, and gets louder as you close. One hit is enough to stop the song; you do not need the kill. After three disrupted singers the sphere drops and Rennala falls.

While she is down, scholars freeze and you get a free damage window. Take a charged heavy string or jump attacks, then leave before the golden explosion that restores the bubble.

Scholars hide behind the bookcase ring. Check the outer aisle if you cannot spot the singer in the open center. Watch chandelier warning circles in the gaps — standing under them drops a fire chandelier.

She periodically rebirths fresh scholars from above. Do not clear the whole room every cycle; only hunt singers and use the downed windows to chunk her bar.

Rennala Phase 2 Strategy

At phase 1 HP 0 a cutscene plays (Ranni’s voice). You load onto an open moonlit water plane with Rennala at a full 4,097 HP bar — this is a second fight, not a short finish.

She opens with glintstone casts: pebbles, cometshards, Star Shower, Shattering Crystal, Comet Azur beams, and Rennala’s Full Moon. Staff spins punish players who hug her without watching the twirl.

Below about 60% HP she starts summoning: Bloodhound Knight, three wolves, a fire-breathing dragon, or a troll knight. Each summon drops a damaging circle on cast and despawns after a few seconds.

When the circle appears, leave first — do not finish a charged heavy through the summon. Kite the spirit or ignore it if Rennala is already recovering from a big spell, then reclose on her.

She is much more evasive than phase 1. Take one or two hits after a finished Full Moon, Comet Azur, or summon despawn; long light strings are how melee dies here.

Melee Strategy

Phase 1 is a hunt, not a duel. Sprint the library for the golden singer, tap them, rotate to the next, then dump jump attacks into Rennala on the break. Reset before the explosion.

In phase 2 hold mid-range on the water: close enough to punish spell finishers, far enough to see Comet Azur and Full Moon startups. Hugging her legs the whole fight eats staff twirls.

Default loop: bait or dodge a cast → one jump attack or two lights → disengage. Save charged heavies for Full Moon explosions you already cleared and for post-summon windows.

Critical hits work in phase 2 once posture breaks. Jump attacks and charged heavies after safe recoveries build that pressure; she cannot be parried.

How to Beat Rennala as a Mage

Lead with a physical or bleed/frost sidearm; keep sorceries as backup. She shrugs off most glintstone damage, so a pure staff plan is the slow clear — use spells for safe chip, not as your only damage.

Phase 1: never spend FP on the golden bubble. Let a spirit ash peel scholars, snipe singers with pebbles or a quick bolt, then save big casts for the downed window after the third disrupt. Leave before the re-bubble explosion.

In phase 2 hold mid-to-long range on the open water, slightly off her center line. Strafe Full Moon and Comet Azur; do not plant your feet to finish a charged Comet while she tracks you.

Cast after Star Shower lands, after Full Moon detonates, after a summon fades, and when Comet Azur ends. Stop immediately if a summon circle starts under you or she begins another beam.

When FP is dry, swap to the sidearm for jump attacks on those same openings. A plain thrusting sword or slash weapon at the recommended upgrade level beats empty-staff panic more often than one more shrugged-off glintstone volley.

Easy / Cheese Strategy

Easiest honest clear: a durable spirit ash for both phases, physical jump attacks on every bubble break, and patience in phase 2 while summons expire.

Bleed or frost from range still builds if melee feels bad. Apply on the downed window or on spell recovery, then back off — sleep and madness do nothing.

Phase 1 can be slowed safely by never killing scholars you do not need; only tap singers and use the freeze window. Greeding extra scholar kills just spawns replacements.

If you only need the Great Rune later, you can leave Raya Lucaria and come back after Altus or Caelid gear — but rebirth and respec stay unavailable until you defeat her.

Rennala Attack Patterns

Each move with its tell, how to dodge it, and when you can punish. Learn singer hunts, Comet Azur, Full Moon and spirit summons first — they end the most attempts.

You can push other Great Rune paths and still reach Leyndell without beating Rennala. Defeating her unlocks rebirth at the library, drops the Great Rune of the Unborn, and is required for Moonlight Altar access and Ranni’s Age of the Stars path later. Most first playthroughs should still take her after Godrick.

Rennala Drops and Rewards

What Rennala drops on defeat, with short notes on the Great Rune of the Unborn and her Remembrance.

Boss Drop

Great Rune of the Unborn

Amber egg dropped on defeat. Already active — no Divine Tower visit. It lets you rebirth at Rennala for one Larval Tear per respec; it is not a Rune Arc body buff.

Boss Drop

Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen

Spend it with Finger Reader Enia for the Carian Regal Scepter or Rennala's Full Moon, or consume it for runes.

Defeating Rennala awards 40,000 runes on a standard first journey.

She remains in the Grand Library afterward. Talk to her for Rebirth (stat respec) and Cosmetics (appearance).

The locked chest behind her seat holds the Dark Moon Ring once you have the Discarded Palace Key from Ranni’s late path.

Rennala Rebirth and Respec

Beat Rennala and she stays on the Grand Library seat. Talk to her anytime to rebirth your stats or change how you look.

What Is Rebirth?

Rebirth lets you move spent attribute levels around while keeping your overall level — the game’s respec.

Cosmetics changes face, hair, and body the same way the Roundtable Hold mirror does.

Both options stay on Rennala after the fight for the rest of the playthrough (she briefly hides during part of Sellen’s quest).

How to Unlock Rebirth

  1. Step 1

Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in the Grand Library.

  2. Step 2

Rest or return to Raya Lucaria Grand Library and speak with Rennala on the center seat.

  3. Step 3

Choose Rebirth to respec or Cosmetics to edit appearance.

What Do You Need to Rebirth?

Rebirth consumes one Larval Tear when you confirm changed attributes. Back out without confirming and the tear is not spent.

You can rebirth as many times as you have Larval Tears. Tears are limited per journey — spend them when a build swap is real.

Cosmetics does not cost a Larval Tear.

Rennala Rebirth vs Cosmetics

Rebirth changes stats. Move points between Vigor, Mind, Endurance, and damage attributes. Costs a Larval Tear when you confirm.

Cosmetics changes looks only — same as the Roundtable Hold mirror. No tear, no stat change.

New face or hair only → Cosmetics. Wrong build → Rebirth.

How Many Times Can You Rebirth?

No hard cap beyond how many Larval Tears you still hold.

Tears come from set world drops, enemies, and shops — limited respec currency, not an infinite dump.

Spend a tear only when the new build is real; Cosmetics never costs a tear if you only need a new look.

What to Do After Rennala

Clear next steps once the Grand Library is yours — rebirth, remembrance, Liurnia routes, and the next shardbearer.

Step 1

Use rebirth if your build is stuck

Talk to Rennala in the Grand Library. Spend a Larval Tear only when you are ready to lock a new stat spread.

Step 2

Claim remembrance rewards at Roundtable Hold

Finger Reader Enia trades Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen for Carian Regal Scepter or Rennala's Full Moon.

Step 3

Push Liurnia side routes and Caria Manor

North Liurnia, Caria Manor, and Ranni’s questline all sit naturally after the academy for most first runs.

Step 4

Choose the next shardbearer path

Common next bosses are Starscourge Radahn in Caelid or the climb toward Altus and later Leyndell once you hold enough Great Runes.

Step 5

Come back for the library chest on Ranni’s path

The locked chest behind Rennala needs the Discarded Palace Key and holds the Dark Moon Ring for Moonlight Altar / Age of the Stars.

Rennala Lore

Who Rennala is, how Caria joined the Erdtree, and why the Grand Library still holds an amber egg.

Rennala began as an astrologer who chased the night sky and encountered an enchanting full moon that would later bewitch the Academy of Raya Lucaria. Lunar magic made her champion, then master of the academy, and founder of Carian royalty.

She led the Glintstone Knights and the house of Caria through two wars against Radagon and the Golden Order. Neither side took a clean victory. Radagon cleansed himself with Celestial Dew, swore love at the Church of Vows, and joined Erdtree and Moon.

Together they had Radahn, Rykard, and Ranni. When Godfrey was hounded from the Lands Between, Radagon left Rennala to become Marika’s second husband and second Elden Lord. He left behind an amber egg holding the Great Rune of the Unborn.

Heartbroken, Rennala lost the academy’s faith. Students locked their queen in the Grand Library, where she clung to imperfect rebirth — endlessly remaking Juvenile Scholars while their memories faded. The Tarnished claims the egg’s Great Rune; Rennala herself lives on in that seat, still holding the egg, and offers rebirth to whoever asks.

Rennala FAQ

Is Rennala optional?

Yes for basic exploration and for entering Leyndell with other Great Rune combinations. No if you want rebirth/respec, her Great Rune, Moonlight Altar access, or Ranni’s Age of the Stars path. Most first playthroughs should still defeat her in Liurnia.

Is Rennala hard?

Phase 1 confuses players who attack the bubble instead of singing scholars. Phase 2 is a standard mage duel with summons under 60% HP. With a physical weapon and a spirit ash, she is one of the fairer shardbearers; pure magic builds feel the resistance hard.

What level should you fight Rennala?

About level 40–50 with a +8/+12 standard weapon (or +4/+5 somber) and Vigor in the mid-20s is a fair first-play window after Godrick and early Liurnia.

What is Rennala weak to?

Physical slash and pierce hit hardest. Strike is average. Magic is heavily resisted. Fire, lightning and holy only lose a little. Bleed, frost, poison and rot work; sleep and madness do not.

How do you open the chest near Rennala?

The locked chest behind her seat in the Grand Library needs the Discarded Palace Key. That key sits in a chest along Ranni’s late path through Nokstella / Lake of Rot. Inside Rennala’s chest is the Dark Moon Ring, used for Moonlight Altar and Ranni’s ending.

Who is Rennala's sister?

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight — younger sister of Rennala, fought in Shadow of the Erdtree. Same Carian blood, different fight and different game area.

Rennala vs Rellana: what's the difference?

Rennala is the base-game Academy of Raya Lucaria boss who offers rebirth afterward. Rellana is a Shadow of the Erdtree remembrance boss (Twin Moon Knight). If you searched “Rennala DLC,” you usually want Rellana.

Does Rennala unlock respec?

Yes. After the fight she offers Rebirth (stat respec for one Larval Tear per confirmed change) and Cosmetics (appearance, free). The Great Rune of the Unborn is already active and does not need a Divine Tower.
