Comet Azur Location

A free legendary sorcery on Mt. Gelmir — not a shop unlock and not inside the Volcano Manor audience hall.

Quick Answer

Location: Cliffs southeast of Hermit Village, Mt. Gelmir

Nearest grace: Primeval Sorcerer Azur. From Hermit Village, stay on the southeast outer cliff path — Azur is the crystalized NPC on that ledge.

Comet Azur is a free legendary sorcery from Primeval Sorcerer Azur — the crystalized NPC on the cliffs southeast of Hermit Village in Mt. Gelmir. You do not buy it, craft it, or finish a full quest first. Walk up, talk once, and the spell is yours.

Hermit Village is the last named stop before you meet Azur. You do not need the village boss. From the far side of the village, stay on the outer cliff path that continues southeast instead of dropping back toward the volcano crater. Azur is the large blue crystal sorcerer slumped against the rock on that ledge; the Primeval Sorcerer Azur Site of Grace is right beside him.

Base Game

In Hermit Village, demi-humans pack the streets. You can sprint the main path; killing Demi-Human Queen Maggie is optional and not required for the spell.

If you fall off the outer cliffs, you usually drop toward lower Gelmir lava or valleys — ride back to Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite or Hermit Village rather than trying to climb the sheer face.

One talk is enough. No trade item, no return visit, and no boss fog gate stands between you and Comet Azur. Full climb steps are under How to Get.

How to Get Comet Azur

The real work is the route to Azur. Talking to him is the easy step at the end.

Reach Mt. Gelmir, travel to Hermit Village, follow the cliff path southeast to Primeval Sorcerer Azur, talk to him, and receive Comet Azur.

  1. Step 1

Get onto Mt. Gelmir. Normal path: from Altus Plateau, push northwest onto the Gelmir roads (Bridge of Iniquity / Road of Iniquity side). Alternatives: Volcano Manor exterior, or the early Abductor Virgin skip from Raya Lucaria (see Early below).

  2. Step 2

Climb to Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite. Use the ladder / ridge sections on the mountain face until that campsite grace is available — it is the clean mid-mountain checkpoint before Hermit Village.

  3. Step 3

From Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite, continue along the mountain path into Hermit Village. Clear or sprint the demi-humans; you do not need Maggie for Comet Azur.

  4. Step 4

Leave Hermit Village on the path that keeps going southeast along the outer cliffs. Do not drop back into the volcano interior or the manor dungeon.

  5. Step 5

Find Primeval Sorcerer Azur on the ledge, light the Primeval Sorcerer Azur Site of Grace if it is still dark, and talk once. Comet Azur is added immediately. Memorize it later when you have 60 Intelligence and 3 free memory slots.

How to Get Comet Azur Early

You can grab Comet Azur before finishing Volcano Manor or Rykard. The practical early path is still a mid-game detour through Liurnia → Gelmir, not a Limgrave freebie — and 60 Intelligence is still required to cast it.

  1. Step 1

Enter the Academy of Raya Lucaria and drop to the bottom of the waterwheel / lift section under the academy (the wet, mechanical undercroft — not the Debate Parlor boss room).

  2. Step 2

Find the Abductor Virgin that uses the long grab. Let it capture you; you will wake in the Volcano Manor underground prison area.

  3. Step 3

From that basement, either die in the lava once a Gelmir or manor grace is available, or clear the path and lift back toward Volcano Manor and the Mt. Gelmir surface. You do not need to finish the Abductor Virgins duo if dying already put you on the mountain.

  4. Step 4

On the Mt. Gelmir surface, ignore Tanith’s assassination list and Rykard. Take the exterior ridges toward Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite → Hermit Village → southeast cliffs → Azur (same final approach as the normal route).

  5. Step 5

Talk to Azur for the spell. Respec or level to Intelligence 60 and free 3 memory slots before you expect to cast it — the early pickup does not lower requirements.

Volcano Manor membership is not required. Comet Azur sits on the exterior Gelmir cliffs, not in the manor audience hall.

Bosses you can skip for the pickup itself: full Volcano Manor quest targets, Godskin Noble in the manor, and Rykard. You still have to survive Gelmir enemies and Hermit Village packs.

If the Abductor grab never fires, you are on the wrong Virgin or still too high in the academy — keep dropping until you are in the undercroft waterwheel area.

How to Get Comet Azur From Volcano Manor

Already inside Volcano Manor? Rest there, then leave the manor halls and climb the outer mountain paths to Hermit Village. Rykard and Tanith’s letter quest are optional for this spell.

  1. Step 1

Rest at Volcano Manor (or Prison Town Church if that is where you currently sit underground). Bring a ranged option or Torrent-ready kit for the exterior climb.

  2. Step 2

Exit the manor interior onto Mt. Gelmir’s open paths. Do not keep diving deeper toward Rykard’s audience path if you only want Comet Azur.

  3. Step 3

Work the exterior ladders and ridges up the mountain toward Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite. That campsite is the reliable stop before Hermit Village whether you came from the manor or Altus.

  4. Step 4

Enter Hermit Village, push to the far side, then take the southeast cliff path to Primeval Sorcerer Azur and talk once.

Finishing Tanith’s questline or killing Rykard does not unlock Comet Azur. You still get the spell by talking to Azur on the cliffs, no matter how far the manor quest has gone.

If you are lost in Prison Town, get back to a manor or Gelmir surface grace first. The path to Azur is outside on the mountain, not another indoor wing.

FP 40 is the cost to start the cast. Holding the beam keeps spending FP for the full channel, so Mind investment or Cerulean Hidden Tear matters as much as that starting cost.

Best Comet Azur Build

Comet Azur is a long, stationary magic beam. Builds around it stack Intelligence, FP sustain, magic damage talismans, and a high-scaling staff, then cast from Terra Magica after the target is locked down.

These are suggested stat spreads for beam setups, not requirements the spell forces beyond Intelligence 60. 60 is the minimum to cast; 80 is the usual damage goal.

Comet Azur One-Shot Build

The classic one-shot setup is less about a secret damage number and more about removing FP cost for a few seconds while your magic buffs are already running. Most failed attempts miss the order: buffs outside, Physick as you enter, Terra Magica planted, then the beam only after the boss is locked down.

Loadout

  1. Step 1

Staff: Lusat's Glintstone Staff (highest sorcery damage, about 50% extra FP cost on sorceries — ignore that cost during Cerulean Hidden Tear).

  2. Step 2

Intelligence: 80 when you can afford it (see Requirements for the cast minimum).

  3. Step 3

Talismans: Graven-Mass (+8% sorcery), Graven-School (+4% sorcery), Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% magic attack, +10% damage taken), fourth slot Ritual Sword (+10% at full HP) or Radagon Icon (faster cast).

  4. Step 4

Physick: Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear + Cerulean Hidden Tear (no FP cost for a short window — what makes the full beam possible).

  5. Step 5

Support spells: Terra Magica on the floor; Golden Vow and/or a body buff (Howl of Shabriri) if your Faith and memory slots allow.

  6. Step 6

Crowd control: sleep pots, a tanky spirit ash, a co-op partner, or a stance break — anything that stops the boss walking out of the lane.

Cast sequence

Outside the fog

  1. Step 1

Memorize Comet Azur + Terra Magica (and Golden Vow if you use it). Equip Lusat's staff and the damage talisman set.

  2. Step 2

Cast Golden Vow / Howl (or your body buff). Drink nothing yet if your Physick window is short — save Cerulean Hidden for the beam.

  3. Step 3

Enter at full HP if you run Ritual Sword Talisman.

As the fight starts

  1. Step 1

Drink Wondrous Physick (Magic-Shrouding + Cerulean Hidden) once you can see the boss and still have time to plant feet.

  2. Step 2

Drop Terra Magica in a medium-long lane with a clear shot at the boss’s torso. Stand fully inside the sigil.

  3. Step 3

If you need the boss held still: throw sleep, let the ash grab aggro, or wait for a stance break / long recovery — do not start the beam on a sprinting target.

Beam window

  1. Step 1

Start Comet Azur and hold. Lock-on is fine when the beam stays on the boss’s body; free-aim if lock pulls the beam into the ground or sky.

  2. Step 2

Do not cancel early over light hits. Cancel only if a killing blow is already coming at where you stand.

  3. Step 3

If the boss leaves the lane, stop, reposition, and only recast Terra Magica / Physick when you have another real opening. Chasing with a slow beam wastes the setup.

Best Talismans for Comet Azur

TalismanEffectWhy Use It
Graven-Mass Talisman+8% sorcery damageThe strongest pure sorcery damage charm for the beam.
Graven-School Talisman+4% sorcery damageStacks with Graven-Mass; the usual second damage talisman.
Magic Scorpion Charm+12% magic attack / +10% damage takenHuge magic boost for a short glass-cannon cast window.
Ritual Sword Talisman+10% attack at full HPWorks on the opening beam if you start the fight topped off.
Radagon IconShorter casting timeShortens the wind-up so the beam comes out before the boss moves.
Godfrey IconBoosts charged spells / skillsSituational here — only keep it if charged casts actually help your kit; many Azur one-shots drop it for pure damage.

Best Wondrous Physick for Comet Azur

TearRoleNote
Cerulean Hidden TearCoreRemoves FP consumption for a short window — required for full-beam one-shots with Lusat's staff.
Magic-Shrouding Cracked TearCoreRaises magic attack for the burst window. Pair with Cerulean Hidden for the standard one-shot flask.
Intelligence-knot Crystal TearOptionalUse when you are still under the Intelligence soft cap and need a temporary Intelligence boost more than raw magic attack.
Greenburst Crystal Tear / stamina tearsOptionalOnly if stamina, not FP, is what cuts your beam short.

Best Buffs for Comet Azur

BuffRoleNote
Terra MagicaFloor magic boostCast first and stand inside the whole beam. Leaving the sigil drops the boost immediately.
Golden VowAura attack buffWorth Faith 25 on hard boss attempts; cast outside the fog so the beam window stays clean.
Howl of Shabriri / body buffsBody attack buffExtra attack layer when you can accept the downside. Do not stack two body buffs that overwrite each other.
Magic-damage grease is not the pointSkipComet Azur deals sorcery damage from your staff — use spell buffs, not weapon grease.

Best Staff for Comet Azur

There is no single staff for every Comet Azur user. Pick max damage, faster cast, or a balanced caster stick based on whether Cerulean Hidden Tear is covering your FP.

StaffDamageFP EfficiencyCast SpeedBest For
Lusat's Glintstone StaffHighest sorcery damage~50% extra sorcery FP costStandardMax damage / one-shot windows
Azur's Glintstone StaffStrong, below LusatNo Lusat-style FP penaltyFaster castingFaster beam start and safer channels
Carian Regal ScepterExcellent balanced INT staffEfficient everyday castingStandardGeneral mage kits that still cast Azur
Meteorite StaffGreat early S-scaling (no upgrade path)Fine early, outscaled laterStandardEarly / mid before upgraded endgame staves

For pure boss melts with Cerulean Hidden Tear, Lusat's wins on raw damage because the extra FP cost stops mattering while the tear is active.

If you cast Comet Azur without infinite FP, Carian Regal or Azur's staff usually feels better than Lusat's — you keep more beam time from the same Mind pool.

Azur's Glintstone Staff →

Comet Azur Effect & Damage

Comet Azur fires a tremendous continuous magic comet. You hold the cast to keep the beam going; it is not a single tap projectile like Comet or Glintstone Pebble.

Fires a tremendous comet within a starry torrent. Legendary sorcery devised by Azur, primeval sorcerer. Fires a tremendous comet in a torrent akin to the distant starry expanse, the place said to be the origin of glintstone. Hold to continue releasing the sorcery's power. When Azur glimpsed into the primeval current, he saw darkness. He was left both bewitched and fearful of the abyss.

How Comet Azur Damage Works

Damage type is Magic. High magic resistance, frequent invulnerability frames, or constant sidesteps waste the channel even when your build looks strong on paper.

The start of the cast only sets the beam up; most of the damage is the sustained torrent while you keep holding.

FP drains for the entire hold. The 40 FP cost is only what starting the cast lists — the real limiter is the ongoing drain, unless Cerulean Hidden Tear covers it.

Intelligence and staff sorcery scaling drive the damage. Weapon grease will not replace a proper staff plus Terra Magica.

How to Increase Comet Azur Damage

  1. Step 1

Raise Intelligence toward 80 and use a high sorcery-scaling staff (Lusat's for big boss melts, Carian Regal or Azur's for longer casting).

  2. Step 2

Stack Graven-Mass (+8%), Graven-School (+4%) and Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% magic) when you can afford the defense loss.

  3. Step 3

Stand in Terra Magica and drink Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear before the cast.

  4. Step 4

Open on a staggered, slept, grabbed or ash-held target so the full beam connects.

  5. Step 5

Keep full HP if you run Ritual Sword Talisman (+10%) for the opening burst.

How to Use Comet Azur Effectively

  1. Step 1

Memorize Comet Azur (3 slots) and equip a staff that meets Intelligence 60.

  2. Step 2

Buff outside the fog. Plant Terra Magica after you enter, then drink Physick as the beam window opens — not much earlier if your tear timer is short.

  3. Step 3

Stand at medium-long range with a clear shot. Back up if the boss keeps closing the gap into your cast spot.

  4. Step 4

Start the cast only when the boss is in a long recovery, stance break, sleep, or held by a spirit ash. Starting while they sprint is the most common miss.

  5. Step 5

Hold the beam. Cutting it early wastes the buff stack; cancel only if a killing blow is already coming at where you stand.

  6. Step 6

If the boss sidesteps out, stop and reset. Do not drag the laser across half the arena hoping it clips them again.

Is Comet Azur Good?

Yes — still one of the strongest PvE magic boss tools in Elden Ring when the target is large, slow, or locked down. It is much worse against fast duelists and anything that never stops moving.

Is Comet Azur Good for Bosses?

Best fit: large, relatively still bosses you can sleep, stance-break, or pin with a spirit ash for a few seconds (big dragons, large field bosses, many open-arena humanoids).

Playable: bosses with a clear punish after a long combo ender or posture break — beam only in that window, then go back to pebbles or Night Comet.

Bad fit: highly mobile duelists, bosses that fly or blink constantly, and tight rooms where any swipe reaches your Terra Magica circle immediately.

FitExamples
StrongLarge field bosses and dragons that stay in an open lane once locked down or staggered.
SituationalShardbearer-style fights with a real posture window — use the beam in that window, do not force it through the whole phase.
WeakFast multi-phase duelists and airborne bosses that leave the beam after one sidestep.

PvE

Excellent on big field bosses, dragons, and large humanoids with long recovery frames.

Pairs with sleep pots, stance breaks, summons holding aggro, or co-op tanks.

Poor when you are forced to stay mobile every second — the cast roots you in place while you channel.

Is Comet Azur Good in PvP?

Rarely a serious dueling tool. The wind-up and rooted channel are easy to punish.

Situational in chaotic free-for-alls if someone is already locked down, but do not build a PvP kit around it.

Is Comet Azur Still Good After Nerfs?

Comet Azur has been adjusted in Elden Ring patches, but what it is for did not change: a huge held magic laser for PvE bosses when you build around the channel. It is still strong in that niche. It was never a general moving caster spell, and later patches did not turn it into one. If a beam feels weak, check buff order and whether the boss can stand still before assuming the spell is useless.

When Comet Azur Is Bad

Fast targets that never plant their feet.

Magic-immune or extremely magic-resistant encounters.

Tight arenas where a single swipe always reaches your cast spot.

Low Intelligence / low FP characters that cannot finish the beam without Cerulean Hidden Tear.

Worth it for Intelligence builds that want a boss-melt button and can spare 3 memory slots. Skip it on quality melee kits, pure Faith runs, or if you hate standing still. The pickup itself is free once you reach Azur, so collecting it is almost always worth it even if you respec later.

Can you get Comet Azur early?

Yes, earlier than a full Volcano Manor clear — including the Abductor Virgin grab under Raya Lucaria onto Mt. Gelmir. It is still a mid-game mountain route, not a first-hour Limgrave pickup, and you still need 60 Intelligence to cast it.

What is the best staff for Comet Azur?

Lusat's Glintstone Staff for maximum damage one-shots (with Cerulean Hidden Tear covering the extra FP cost), Azur's Glintstone Staff when you want faster casting, and Carian Regal Scepter for a balanced everyday Intelligence staff.

Graven-Mass (+8% sorcery), Graven-School (+4% sorcery) and Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% magic attack) are the core damage stack. Add Ritual Sword (+10% at full HP) or Radagon Icon if you need a faster wind-up.

Can Comet Azur one-shot bosses?

Yes on many large PvE bosses when you combine Lusat's staff, the sorcery damage talisman stack, Terra Magica, Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Cerulean Hidden Tear, then hold the full beam on a slept, staggered or ash-held target. Mobile bosses can still walk out.

Is Comet Azur good / worth it?

Yes for Intelligence PvE boss melts and free legendary collection. No as a general moving caster spell or PvP main tool. Worth picking up either way because talking to Azur costs nothing.
