Quick Answer
Location: Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree — chest on an upper platform inside the church northeast of Drainage Channel
Nearest grace: Drainage Channel. Found in a chest — not a boss drop.
Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman sits in a chest inside Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree — not on a boss drop and not sold by a merchant. Start from the Drainage Channel Site of Grace once you have Haligtree access. You do not need Malenia for this pickup.
Short version: Drainage Channel → east on the high roots to the church roof → drop onto the rafters → southwest to the upper platform chest. Step-by-step landmarks and enemy warnings are under How to Get below.

Required Progression — Haligtree Access
If you cannot reach Drainage Channel yet, finish Haligtree access first — that is the long part. The chest run from the grace is short once Elphael is open.
| Step | Detail | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Haligtree Secret Medallion (both halves) | Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics + Castle Sol tower | Yes |
| Grand Lift of Rold — secret path | Show the assembled medallion for Consecrated Snowfield (not the normal Mountaintops hoist) | Yes |
| Ordina, Liturgical Town | Complete the evergaol statue / seal puzzle to open the Haligtree portal | Yes |
| Miquella's Haligtree → Loretta | Climb the canopy path and defeat Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree | Yes — gates Elphael |
| Elphael → Drainage Channel | Enter Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree; cross the first rot channel to the Drainage Channel grace | Yes — start of the chest route |
| Malenia | Not required for this chest | No |
This is an optional endgame branch. The standard ending path through Farum Azula does not take you here.
Once Drainage Channel is lit, the chest run is short — the long part is unlocking Haligtree and Elphael.

How to Get the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman
Short route from Drainage Channel. Use the outline for direction, then the steps below for landmarks and enemy warnings.
Step 1
Drainage Channel Site of Grace
Step 2
East exit onto outer roots (stay high)
Step 3
Root / beam path to the stone church roof
Step 4
Drop through the roof hole onto rafters
Step 5
Southwest along rafters past Kindred of Rot

Step 1
Rest at Drainage Channel
Nearest grace for the chest. If you only have Elphael Inner Wall: drop into the first rot channel, push to the far alcove, and take the ladder down to Drainage Channel. Preserving Scarlet Rot resistance (boluses / armor) helps on that approach, but the talisman route itself starts after the grace.

Step 2
Exit east and stay on the high roots
Leave through the eastern exit. Landmark: continuous tree roots and stone buttresses running outside the building line, arcing toward a freestanding church mass. Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman Effect
What the talisman changes once it is equipped — and how hard PvP cuts the same bonus.
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Effect | Enormously boosts physical damage negation |
| PvE Physical Damage Reduction | 20% |
| PvP Physical Damage Reduction | 5% |
| Weight | 0.8 |
| Damage types covered | Physical only (Strike / Slash / Pierce) |
| Elemental coverage | None — Magic / Fire / Lightning / Holy unchanged |
| Stacks with | Armor and other non-Dragoncrest defense talismans |
| Cannot stack with | Dragoncrest Shield / +1 / +2 (same series) |
The 20% figure is the PvE physical damage negation bonus. In PvP the same talisman only grants 5%.
It raises physical damage negation — the reduction applied to incoming Strike, Slash, and Pierce hits — not HP, poise, or absorb shields by itself.
Magic, Fire, Lightning, and Holy hits do not get this bonus. Bring a different negation talisman when those dominate the fight.
In practice
Compared with Dragoncrest Shield +2: same 0.8 weight, stronger PvE physical negation (20% vs 17%) and a small PvP bump (5% vs 4%). Swap as soon as you open the chest — there is no reason to keep +2 equipped afterward.
Against physical hits it makes armor and flasks go further on trades. It will not out-value a damage talisman if you barely get hit and just need the boss dead faster.
If most of the damage you just took was physical swings, keep Greatshield on. If the bar dropped mostly to magic, fire, lightning, or holy, swap it off.
Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman PvE vs PvP
| Factor | PvE | PvP |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Damage Reduction | 20% | 5% |
| Value | Very high | Much lower |
| Best use | Bosses / exploration vs physical enemies | Situational only |
In PvE this is one of the strongest single-slot physical defense options in the base game.
In PvP the effect is heavily cut, so do not plan invasions or duels around the 20% number.
What Damage Does Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman Reduce?
What incoming damage this talisman reduces — and what it ignores.
| Damage Type | Reduced? |
|---|---|
| Physical damage | Yes |
| Slash | Yes — physical |
| Strike | Yes — physical |
| Pierce | Yes — physical |
| Magic | No |
| Fire | No |
| Lightning | No |
| Holy | No |
Does Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman Stack?
Only one Dragoncrest series talisman can be equipped at a time — base Shield, +1, +2, or Greatshield.
It stacks with armor physical negation and with other defense talismans that are not part of this series (for example elemental negation pieces).
Equipping Greatshield replaces Dragoncrest Shield +2 rather than adding on top of it.
Dragoncrest Greatshield vs Dragoncrest Shield Talismans
There is no real Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman +2, +3, or +4. Greatshield is the final piece of the Dragoncrest Shield line.
| Talisman | Tier | PvE Physical Reduction | PvP Physical Reduction | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragoncrest Shield Talisman | Base | 10% | 2% | Bestial Sanctum (Dragonbarrow) |
| Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +1 | +1 | 13% | 3% | Sainted Hero's Grave (Altus) |
| Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2 | +2 | 17% | 4% | Crumbling Farum Azula |
| Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman | Final / Greatshield | 20% | 5% | Elphael (Drainage Channel route) |
Each step is a direct upgrade in physical negation. Greatshield is the end of the line, not a separate +3 item with its own name.
If a guide mentions Greatshield +2, +3, or +4, it almost always means Dragoncrest Shield +2 or this Greatshield talisman.
Dragoncrest Greatshield vs Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2
Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2 is the previous step in the same series. Greatshield is its direct upgrade once you can reach Elphael.
| Factor | Dragoncrest Shield +2 | Greatshield |
|---|---|---|
| PvE physical reduction | 17% | 20% |
| PvP physical reduction | 4% | 5% |
| Weight | 0.8 | 0.8 |
| Location | Crumbling Farum Azula | Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree |
| When to equip | Best option until you clear into Elphael | Replace +2 as soon as you open the chest |
Is Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman +3?
No. There is no item named Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman +3.
Players often treat Greatshield as “the +3” because it sits above Shield, +1, and +2 in the same physical-negation family.
If someone calls it Greatshield +3, they mean this talisman.
Is There a Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman +2 or +4?
There is no Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman +2 and no Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman +4 as separate items.
People looking for “Greatshield +2” almost always want Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2, the previous tier in this series.
The line is Shield → +1 → +2 → Greatshield. It stops at Greatshield.
Is Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman Worth It?
Worth it depends on whether the fight is mostly physical, and whether you are in PvE or PvP.
Is It Good in PvE?
Very strong in PvE. A flat 20% physical negation bonus is rare for a single talisman slot.
Default defensive pick for late Haligtree / Elphael clears, Farum Azula knights and beasts, and any dungeon where the cast leans on weapons rather than pure elemental spam.
Keep it on for open-world cleanup once you have it — 0.8 weight is cheap insurance on physical trash packs.
Is It Good in PvP?
Much weaker in PvP because the bonus drops to 5%.
Situational at best for duels or invasions — do not drop a damage, stamina, or equip-load talisman just to chase the 20% PvE reputation.
Is It Good for Boss Fights?
Strong on bosses whose kit is mostly physical swings: late-game knights, colossal weapons, claws, and bite / slam strings.
Still reasonable on hybrid bosses when the long physical combo windows hurt more than the occasional magic or fire tag — swap mid-fight only if the elemental phase is the real killer.
Inside Elphael itself, the talisman helps on the way to Malenia; for Malenia specifically, physical negation helps her blade strings, but it is not a rot cure and will not fix heal-on-hit mistakes.
When not to use it
Skip or swap off when the bar is dropping to Magic, Fire, Lightning, or Holy first — Greatshield does not touch those channels.
If you have not reached Elphael yet, keep Dragoncrest Shield +2 equipped until this chest is open.
If you need the slot for a build-defining damage piece (skill, charged attack, or spell power) and you already face-tank rarely, offense can out-value the 20%.
Best Uses for Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman
Use Greatshield when you expect heavy physical pressure. Pair it with solid armor; do not treat it as a damage talisman.
Defensive Builds
Tank, quality, and greatshield or spear poke setups get the most from it — you take more trades on purpose, so each hit costs less.
Strength colossal and jump-attack setups that leave long recovery windows also benefit when a whiff gets punished.
Hybrid melee casters can keep it for defense while Godfrey Icon, Shard of Alexander, or spell-power talismans cover damage on the other slots.
Armor Synergy
Stack it with high physical-negation armor. The talisman multiplies how much each armor point is worth against physical hits.
Medium armor plus Greatshield often beats going heavier only for a small negation bump — check equip load before locking a fat roll.
If you are already near a load breakpoint, keep the 0.8 weight and shave armor or a weapon instead of dropping this slot first.
Use the armor optimizer and best-armor notes when you want a full defensive set around this slot.
DLC / Boss Use
Base-game talisman, still useful in Shadow of the Erdtree against physical-leaning dungeon knights, beasts, and weapon bosses.
Swap to elemental negation (or another defensive talisman for that damage type) when a Remembrance or field boss is clearly magic- or fire-heavy.
Re-equip it between attempts when the fight is physical; leave it off when the fight is not. It is not mandatory for the DLC.
