Chest at the top of Chelona's Rise after the spirit turtle seal

Ranni's Dark Moon Location

Chelona's Rise on the Moonlight Altar — a sealed tower chest after Ranni's late quest path, not a shop unlock.

Quick Answer

Location: Chest in Chelona's Rise, Moonlight Altar (southwest of Moonfolk Ruins)

Nearest grace: Altar South. From the Moonlight Altar plateau, ride southwest past Moonfolk Ruins to the sealed rise, then clear the spirit turtles before climbing to the chest.

Ranni's Dark Moon is a legendary Carian sorcery locked behind Chelona's Rise on the Moonlight Altar plateau. The chest is inside the tower after you break the spirit-turtle seal — not a shop purchase and not a free talk pickup like Comet Azur.

Moonlight Altar sits high above southwest Liurnia and only opens after you push Ranni's quest far enough to defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, and take the coffin lift up. On the plateau, ride southwest past Moonfolk Ruins to Chelona's Rise. Interact with the sealed door, find all three spirit turtles across the altar, return to the tower, climb to the chest, and take the spell.

Base Game

Altar South is the closest grace to Chelona's Rise. Moonlight Altar grace sits farther inland on the same plateau if you came up from the Astel lift.

You cannot climb into Chelona's Rise from the lower Liurnia lake surface. The plateau is a separate upper layer unlocked by Ranni's late quest path.

The three turtles only count after you start the seal at the Rise. Fast-traveling between turtle spots usually breaks the spawn — ride Torrent the whole loop.

Dark Moon Greatsword is a different Ranni reward at the Cathedral of Manus Celes on the same plateau — a weapon, not this sorcery chest in Chelona's Rise.

How to Get Ranni's Dark Moon

The real work is unlocking Moonlight Altar and finishing Chelona's Rise — the chest is the easy last step.

Finish Ranni's quest through Astel to reach Moonlight Altar, ride to Chelona's Rise, start the seal, kill three spirit turtles without fast travel, return to the tower, and open the chest.

How to Reach Moonlight Altar

Chelona's Rise is not reachable from the Liurnia lake floor. You only stand on Moonlight Altar after the late Ranni underground route ends at Astel.

  1. Step 1

Start or resume Ranni the Witch at Ranni's Rise (Three Sisters, west Liurnia). Speak to her, then to Blaidd, Seluvis, and Iji so the quest is active.

  2. Step 2

Defeat Starscourge Radahn (Redmane Castle festival). The falling star opens the path into Nokron, Eternal City beneath Limgrave / Mistwood.

  3. Step 3

In Nokron, reach Night's Sacred Ground and take the Fingerslayer Blade from the chest there (past the Mimic Tear route into the city).

  4. Step 4

Give the Fingerslayer Blade to Ranni at the top of Ranni's Rise. She leaves; Renna's Rise beside her tower unlocks.

  5. Step 5

Enter Renna's Rise and take the waygate to Ainsel River Main. Loot Miniature Ranni from the nearby coffin stone, rest at a grace, and talk to the doll until she has nothing new to say.

  6. Step 6

Push north through Ainsel River Main / Nokstella, drop into the Lake of Rot, and follow the Grand Cloister path to the coffin that leads to Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.

  7. Step 7

Defeat Astel. After the fight, take the exit coffin / lift that brings you up onto the Moonlight Altar plateau (high cliffs above southwest Liurnia).

  8. Step 8

Light Moonlight Altar Site of Grace if it is still dark, then ride south / southwest toward Altar South and the lone rise by Moonfolk Ruins — that tower is Chelona's Rise.

If Renna's Rise is still sealed, you have not finished the Fingerslayer Blade hand-in at Ranni's Rise yet.

Moonlight Altar is a separate upper layer. Seeing Cathedral of Manus Celes on a high plateau means you are in the right place; the lower lake shore under Liurnia is not.

Dark Moon Greatsword is earned later at the Cathedral of Manus Celes on this same plateau. It is not required to open Chelona's Rise or take the sorcery.

How to Unlock Chelona's Rise

  1. Step 1

From Altar South (closest grace) or Moonlight Altar grace, ride to Chelona's Rise — the spirit-sealed tower southwest of Moonfolk Ruins on the plateau edge.

  2. Step 2

Read / interact with the sealed entrance at the base of the tower. The three spirit turtles only spawn after this interaction.

  3. Step 3

Do not fast travel for the rest of the hunt. Clear the turtles (locations below), then come back here for the chest steps.

Open the Chest

  1. Step 1

When all three turtles are gone, ride straight back to Chelona's Rise without warping. The door seal should be gone.

  2. Step 2

Enter the tower and take the lift / stairs to the top floor.

  3. Step 3

Open the chest for Ranni's Dark Moon. Memorize it later when Intelligence and memory slots allow. You need 68 Intelligence and 2 free memory slots before it will cast.

Chelona's Rise Turtle Locations

Turtle 1

Turtle 1 — Beside Chelona's Rise

On the ground immediately around Chelona's Rise. Circle the tower base and the nearby rocks / slope on the plateau side before you ride inland. It is the easiest of the three and the usual first kill.

Turtle 2

Turtle 2 — Cliff SE of Lunar Estate Ruins

From Chelona's Rise, ride northeast toward Lunar Estate Ruins, then continue past the ruins toward the southeast outer cliff of the plateau. The turtle sits on a ledge on that cliff face — look over the rim toward the drop, not only on the ruin courtyards. You may need to drop one tier onto the ledge or shoot it from above.

Turtle 3

Turtle 3 — Above Ringleader's Evergaol

Ride to the northwest Moonlight Altar evergaol (Ringleader's Evergaol). The turtle flies high above the evergaol ring, not on the portal floor. Lock on from the ring or a nearby rise and hit it with a bow, throwing knife, or cheap projectile. Melee on the ground cannot reach it.

Suggested loop: Turtle 1 at the Rise → Turtle 2 past Lunar Estate on the SE cliff → Turtle 3 at the NW evergaol → straight back to the Rise.

If two ground turtles are gone and the door is still sealed, the flying evergaol turtle is almost always the missing one — look up, not at the portal plate.

Start the seal at Chelona's Rise before the loop. Riding to a turtle site with no seal started often means nothing is there.

Stay mounted between sites. Opening the map and fast-traveling to “save time” is the most common way to break turtle spawns mid-puzzle.

Ranni's Dark Moon Turtles Not Appearing?

If spirit turtles are missing, the problem is almost always spawn order or travel method — not a permanently broken chest.

Return to Chelona's Rise and interact with the sealed door again so the puzzle is armed, then leave on Torrent without opening the map fast-travel list.

Fast travel, dying and respawning far away, or quitting out mid-loop can despawn turtles that had not been hit yet. Restart from the Rise and ride the full circuit again.

Confirm you are on the Moonlight Altar plateau (high cliffs, Cathedral of Manus Celes visible inland), not the lower Liurnia lake shore under the cliffs.

For the flying turtle, switch to a ranged tool and look straight up over the northwest evergaol — it will not stand on the portal floor.

Progress check: sealed door still locked = at least one turtle left or the seal was never started. Door open = climb the tower; the spell is the chest, not a turtle drop.

What to try

  1. Step 1

Rest at Altar South, walk back to Chelona's Rise, re-read the seal, then ride the three sites in one continuous loop.

  2. Step 2

If a turtle still refuses to appear, rest at a nearby grace, reload the area, and ride back from Chelona's Rise on horseback instead of warping straight to each turtle spot.

  3. Step 3

Already opened the Rise earlier on this character? The chest may already be empty — check inventory / legendary sorceries before repeating the puzzle.

FP 57 is charged per cast — this is a single moon projectile, not a held beam. 2 memory slots are the larger loadout cost for most Intelligence bars.

Ranni's Dark Moon Effect

Ranni's Dark Moon incarnates a cold, dark moon and sends it at foes. It is a slow, heavy Carian moon projectile — an opening magic tool, not a spam pebble.

Incarnate a cold, dark moon and launch it at foes.

What Does Ranni's Dark Moon Do?

Cast forms a dark moon and launches it toward the target. The projectile is large, travels at a deliberate pace, and is easy to read at long range.

Damage type is Magic. The cold moon also builds Frostbite on hit, so one connect is both a direct magic chunk and frost pressure.

Like other Full Moon sorceries, players use the hit as a setup: after it lands, follow-up sorceries usually hit harder while the target’s magic defense is softened.

Unlike Rennala's moon, this legendary version also builds Frostbite — better when you already run cold tools, or when you want frost and a magic-defense opener in one cast.

Frost and Magic Debuff

Frostbite buildup is the clear difference versus Rennala's Full Moon, which has no frost on hit.

The moon stays useful as a setup even when a cheaper pebble looks stronger on a single hit — open with the moon, then dump faster spells while the target is softened.

You do not need to recast the moon every second. Throw it once for the opening, spend your follow-ups, and only re-open when the fight resets.

Frost-immune targets still take the magic hit; only the frost bar does nothing on true frost-immune foes. Keep the spell for the magic chunk and setup value, or swap moons if your kit prefers Rennala's line.

Opener: Shred Then Follow Up

Use the dark moon as spell one of a punish, not as the only button you mash for the whole fight.

  1. Step 1

Memorize Ranni's Dark Moon beside at least one cheaper follow-up (glintstone comet line, Night Comet, cold projectile, or Carian sword spell).

  2. Step 2

Buff outside if you use aura / body buffs. Enter the opening with a clear lane at medium-long range — the moon is slow; do not start it point-blank into a swipe.

  3. Step 3

Cast Ranni's Dark Moon once the target is planted, staggered, ash-held, or in a long recovery so the projectile can connect.

  4. Step 4

On hit, immediately fire your high-DPS or frost follow-ups while the target is softened. Do not wait idle for a second moon.

  5. Step 5

If the moon misses or the boss walks out, cancel the plan — reposition and use cheaper spells. Only re-open with the moon when you have another clean lane.

Damage and Scaling

Intelligence and staff sorcery scaling drive the direct hit. Meet the cast requirement first, then push Intelligence for damage like any late Carian spell.

2 memory slots is a real loadout cost. Keep the moon as a setup spell beside cheaper projectiles, not as your only memorized tool.

FP 57 per cast is high versus pebbles or Carian Slicer — one moon to open, then spend efficient spells in the follow-up window.

Staff choice follows general Intelligence casting: high sorcery scaling for the hit, or a Carian-friendly staff if the rest of the bar is sword sorceries.

Ranni's Dark Moon vs Rennala's Full Moon

Both open fights by cutting magic defense. They differ on frost, FP cost, and how you unlock them.

Both are Carian moon projectiles that shred magic defense. Ranni's Dark Moon adds frost and is a Chelona's Rise legendary chest; Rennala's Full Moon is the remembrance trade with a slightly different stat and FP profile.

How you get itChelona's Rise chest (turtle puzzle)Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen → Enia
Best forFrost / magic INT kits; legendary collectionSlightly cheaper FP moon; remembrance slot choice

If you only memorize one moon, pick what your kit already wants: frost and the legendary chest → Ranni; remembrance trade and slightly lower FP → Rennala.

Rennala's Full Moon also dispels enemy sorcery that touches the moon — useful against cast pressure. Ranni's Dark Moon is the cold legendary moon from Chelona's Rise.

You can collect both across a playthrough (chest + remembrance). Memory slots usually keep only one moon equipped at a time.

Choose Ranni's Dark Moon if…

You already finished the Moonlight Altar route, want frost on the moon hit, or you are collecting legendary sorceries and can spare the cast Intelligence plus the two memory slots.

Choose Rennala's Full Moon if…

You defeated Rennala, prefer the remembrance spell with lower FP cost, or you care more about the pure magic moon / dispel line than frost buildup.

Which Full Moon sorcery should you use?

Use Ranni's Dark Moon when frost and the legendary Chelona's Rise pickup matter; use Rennala's Full Moon when you want the remembrance moon with lower FP and no frost focus. Both shred magic defense — the real choice is frost + quest chest versus remembrance + FP.

Rennala's Full Moon →

Is Ranni's Dark Moon Good?

Yes as a PvE opener that shreds magic defense on Intelligence builds that can afford the slots. It is not your main moving DPS spell, and it is a poor dueling main button.

PvE

Strong when you open with the moon, then dump cheaper sorceries or cold tools into the debuff window instead of recasting the moon for every hit.

Pairs cleanly with frost kits (freezing pots, cold weapons, Adula's Moonblade, other cold sorceries) when Frostbite is already part of the plan.

Still worth picking up on Moonlight Altar for the legendary sorcery even if you only memorize it for hard magic-weak bosses.

Weak if you cannot plant feet through the cast, or if the target sidesteps before the slow moon connects.

Bosses

Best on large or mid-speed bosses in open arenas where the moon has a clear lane and you have time to follow up (big field bosses, large humanoids after a long recovery).

Use it as spell one of a punish after stance break, ash grab, or a long combo ender — not as the only cast during a two-second stagger.

Playable on slower shardbearer-style fights if you only throw the moon in real openings, then return to pebbles / Night Comet / melee sorceries.

Poor on hyper-aggressive duelists, tiny airborne targets, and magic-immune encounters where neither the hit nor the shred pays off.

PvP

Telegraphed and slow. Easy to roll or punish if you open with it from neutral in a duel.

Situational in chaotic invasions when someone is already locked down or distracted; do not build a whole PvP bar around the dark moon alone.

Best Uses for Ranni's Dark Moon

Treat Ranni's Dark Moon as a setup spell in a wider Intelligence kit — open with the moon, then spend cheaper sorceries. It is not a spell you spam alone for every fight.

Intelligence Builds

Meet Intelligence 68, keep 2 memory slots free, and stack a high-scaling staff. The moon is support for the rest of your sorceries.

Mind investment matters less than for a held beam, but FP 57 per cast still punishes spam — open, then switch.

Faith is optional and only for aura buffs (for example Golden Vow). Arcane is not required for the spell.

Frost / Magic Builds

Run the dark moon beside other Magic / frost tools so the frost bar and magic shred both pay off.

After the moon lands, follow with faster glintstone or cold pressure instead of waiting for another full moon cast.

If the enemy is frost-immune, keep the spell only for the magic hit and shred — or swap to Rennala's Full Moon if that fits the kit better.

Best Staff and Talismans

Staffs: Carian Regal Scepter or other high Intelligence sorcery sticks for general casting; Lusat's Glintstone Staff when you want max spell damage and can cover FP; Meteorite Staff only as an early bridge before you can wield endgame staves.

Talismans: Graven-Mass (+8% sorcery), Graven-School (+4% sorcery), and Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% magic attack) are the usual damage stack. Radagon Icon helps the slow moon leave the hand sooner.

Terra Magica still helps if you plant feet for a full magic punish after the moon connects.

Ranni's Dark Moon FAQ

Where is Ranni's Dark Moon?

In a chest at the top of Chelona's Rise on the Moonlight Altar plateau (southwest Liurnia, southwest of Moonfolk Ruins). Nearest grace is Altar South. You must unlock the Rise by hunting three spirit turtles after starting the seal.

How do you unlock Chelona's Rise?

Finish Ranni's path through Radahn → Nokron Fingerslayer Blade → Renna's Rise / Ainsel → Lake of Rot → Astel, then take the post-Astel coffin up to Moonlight Altar. At Chelona's Rise, start the seal, kill the three spirit turtles without fast travel (one by the tower, one on the Lunar Estate SE cliff, one flying above the NW evergaol), return, and open the upstairs chest.

Why are the Ranni's Dark Moon turtles not appearing?

Start the seal at Chelona's Rise first, then ride the full loop on Torrent. Fast travel often prevents turtle spawns. The third turtle flies above the northwest evergaol and needs a ranged hit. If the door is already open, check whether the chest was looted earlier.

What Intelligence do you need for Ranni's Dark Moon?

68 Intelligence, 57 FP per cast, 2 memory slots, and a staff. Faith and Arcane are not required for the sorcery itself.

What does Ranni's Dark Moon do?

It incarnates a cold, dark moon and launches it at foes for Magic damage with Frostbite buildup. Like other Full Moon sorceries, players use it as a setup so follow-up spells hit a softened target harder.

Ranni's Dark Moon or Rennala's Full Moon?

Ranni's Dark Moon (INT 68, FP 57) is the frost legendary chest on Moonlight Altar. Rennala's Full Moon (INT 70, FP 47) is the remembrance trade with lower FP and no frost focus. Both shred magic defense — pick frost + legendary chest, or remembrance + cheaper FP.

Is Ranni's Dark Moon good?

Yes for Intelligence PvE as a magic-shred opener and frost tool when you can spare two slots. Weak as a moving DPS spam spell and poor as a primary PvP button. Still worth collecting once you are on the Moonlight Altar for the legendary sorcery.

Is Ranni's Dark Moon the same as Dark Moon Greatsword?

No. Ranni's Dark Moon is a legendary sorcery in Chelona's Rise. Dark Moon Greatsword is a separate Ranni quest weapon at the Cathedral of Manus Celes on the same plateau.
